Welcome Back!
Notable scenes:
-Duo hates bullshit Lambda Driver bosses as much as I do!
-Guame orders an official challenge, setting the stage for today's mission.
-Simon continues his angry antihero act. Ingram orders us to deploy without his knowledge.
Chapter 027
Pierce the Heavens with your Drill
Full mission recording
As you may notice, I FINALLY found the fucking option to mask OOC logging.
Anyway, since Guame is an unreliable asshole, this mission starts with Gurren-Lagann solo against about 25 Gunmen, including Viral as a boss again. Fortunately, the rest of my team arrives after just a turn or two.
As always, new units!
Nanoha: "Raging Heart! Divine Shooter!"
She fires off a flurry of guided energy blasts, aiming to throughly disable as many Ganmen as possible.
Nanoha is /m/! She's very similar to Taomon in play style, although her shield is a little weaker and she has more multi-target attacks. Call her a solid B-list unit.
Lamia analyses their movements, and begins taking shots with her Illusion Arrows at them from ranged while hovering in the sky.
Lamia is, as usual, about as good as she was in OG2 - that is to say, pretty damn good. Lots of good ranged attacks, strangely Super-ish, really solid Spirit set.
The Bangai-O soars over the battlefield, then spirals down towards the middle of the fray, unleashing a random spray of homing missiles as it does so.
Bangai-O is weird. It's got several MAP attacks and very high damage output, but it only has decentish evasion and it takes hits pretty badly. On the plus side, it has a repair cost of 10. It's like Boss Borot, if Boss Borot didn't suck!
After about half the Gunmen are taken out:
Suddenly, what appears to be a black cloud in the distance begins to rush the battlefield.
Like a mechanoid plague of locusts, a perhaps familiar enemy to some of you is descending. (( http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v26/professorscissors/snapshot20080926000929.jpg ))
OH NO! EVILUDERS!
Anyone who's played W knows how this goes. Third side to the battle in the form of annoying black bugs that spawn infinitely.
Taking a moment to size up the new enemy, Riki guns the Bangai-O up and to the side, coming up around the edge of the Eviluder swarm.
He draws an enormous weapon resembling a baseball bat, and swings it with full force at one of the Eviluders, aiming it back towards the rest of its brethren.
The Eviluder is struck into another Eviluder, into another, in a large chain of tumbling machines, and 15 of them slam into one another before exploding, the rest of the swarm finally managing to avoid their own kind.
Fuck yeah Chain Attack.
Simon takes full advantage of the opening. Grabbing one end of the shades with both hands, he rears back and leaps up, bringing them down at Enkidu with all his might.
Viral recovers from the shock of losing his blade just in time to bring up his shield to block.
Viral brings the shield up, but it's not enough to prevent the shades from bashing into shield, pushing his arm down, and bashing the Enkidu's big head.
[3896 damage (Defeated)]
The cockpit crunches a bit above him, and the controls give out.
The hatch to open the machine is also jammed, leaving Viral stuck in the Enkidu as it falls.
Battle Master condition (defeat Viral with all damage being dealt by Simon) complete!
Unfortunately, this is also a problem, since it means Simon flies off in Lagann to save Nia. This leaves an unpiloted Gurren on the field, which I have to protect for fear of Game Over. Taomon has a skill that makes her take less damage when using Defensive Support, so I move her next to it for now.
Suddenly, standing atop the ship, an imposing, lone Gunmen appears: Guame's personal custom Gunmen, Gember. (( http://www.gurren-lagann.net/mecha/images/gember.gif It's in vaguely humanoid form at the moment.))
Guame: "Humans are such a pain~"
Guame: "Isn't it magnificent? The form of my Gember?"
Guame: "Now that I am getting involved, the balance of power has been reversed, human scum!"
On top of that, the mission's boss is now on the field! And he's no slouch, either - true to his name, Guame is pretty fuckin' Immovable, with 36,000 HP and defense through the roof.
[Battle Animation:]
In one of his less shrewd moments of judgement, Riki boosts down towards Genber and hits it on the head with his bat, hoping to bowl it into the enemy battleship.
Guame shows his title of being the 'immovable,' as Gember's horns take the blow from the bat, catching it, leaving him virtually unharmed, though the horns bend a little.
[1851 damage (Chain Cancel)]
The Gember raises a hand to bash Bangai-O.
Riki fires an EX-HOMING attack at Gember.
Bangai-O fires its missiles, which do minor, if any damage to Gember.
[1001 damage]
Gember's fist on the other hand launches Bangai-O into the ground, the bat ripped from his hands...
before Gember wrenches it out from between his horns and tosses it down.
[2857 damage]
Gember has one of this game's new mech attributes: Chain Cancel. Particularly big/sturdy enemies are immune to Chain Attack, stopping the chain from moving past themself. Thusly does Riki's hubris become his downfall, as he loses about 60% of his HP in one go.
Anyway, once Guame's HP drops below 10,800, the end-mission cutscene triggers. He goes for Riki (Closest person? Special scene?) for the Let's Eat Gurren bit...
A small dot appears in the sky, and it slowly grows as it descends, until the shape of Lagann is clearly visible.
Lagann flies straight down into the top of Gurren, instantly combining.
As Gurren-Lagann stands up to its full height, the hatch on its head opens, exposing Simon, standing tall, jacket flapping in the breeze, arms crossed, and a determined look on his face.
Guame: "Damn, it's that mini one again!"
Simon: "Driving the enemy to despair...planning hidden ambushes...these little tricks will never work on us! We surpass the impossible and kick reason to the curb--that's the motto of the great Dai-Gurren Brigade!"
Simon then points up to the sky.
Simon: "No matter what you throw in my way, I will drill through! My drill is the drill that pierces the heavens, and NOTHING WILL STAND IN MY WAY!"
Guame: "What? What are you blathering about?"
Simon: "Who the hell do you think I am?! I am Simon. The leader of the invincible Dai-Gurren Brigade. And I will DESTROY ANYTHING YOU PUT IN MY PATH! I, SIMON THE DRILLER!"
And then, to finish the battle, a new special attack:
[Battle Animation:]
Gurren-Lagann leaps into the air, both arms pulled back, drills out, ready to strike straight into Gember's eyes.
Guame: "OH SHUT UP!"
Guame leaps up, dropping Bangai-O on the ground, and transforming back to gorilla-like form.
Simon's blow misses, and Gember descends from the sky, arms wide, and as he lands with a headbutt, he tries to crush and pierce Gurren-Lagann at the same time with a spiked bear hug.
Guame: "GEMBER PRESS!!"
[2280 damage (Counter)]
Simon braces against the attack, and as he does, a series of visions passes before his eyes. Visions of everything that gave him the strength to fight.
Then, Simon lifted his gaze.
Simon: "FINAL BLOW!"
With that, drills burst forth from every opening on Gurren-Lagann's body.
The drills push out against Gember, and move the immovable, launching it back off balance.
Gurren-Lagann's shades pop off and land in Gurren-Lagann's outstretched hand, and the Ganmen rears back and throws.
The shades split in two, and impale Gember's appendages, spreading them out.
The Gember is struck by the pair of shades, momentarily pinned, but with great strength and will it wrenches itself free.
Having been freed from Gember's grasp, though, the Bangai-O is waiting for him.
Riki: "Don't interrupt a hero's special attack!"
Flying up behind Guame as he breaks free from his bonds, Riki activates the EX-FREEZE attack.
"What!?!" Guame yells as his Gember is suddenly frozen in space.
[Freeze (Counter Support)]
Simon proceeds as if nothing happened, raises Gurren-Lagann's right arm, and makes drills burst out all along the length of it.
Simon: "GIGA..."
The drills then condense, to form one gigantic drill that covers Gurren-Lagann's entire right arm.
Simon: "DRILL..."
And Gurren-Lagann launches itself at the immobilized Genber, spinning at an extremely fast velocity.
Simon: "BRRRREAAAAAKEEEERRRRRR!!!"
[11880 damage (Defeated)]
Gember is run entirely through, a gaping hole in the middle of the machine left behind Gurren-Lagann's path before Gurren-Lagann lands, a massive explosion only then bursting forth from Gember.
The explosion is so massive that it encompasses some of the other Eviluders, who go up in a booming chain reaction.
I'd have to check to be sure, but I think that even outside of scripted events, GDB is the strongest single-target attack I have at the moment. Even if not, it's definitely something I'll be using a lot from here on out.
As a quick side comment, there seem to be several new support types in UG - Counter Support and Sequence Support, to name a couple. May go into more detail on them once I've got them figured out.
Next Week: G Gundam plot!
