(no subject)

Welcome back again! Strange developments today, as I get some UC goodness in my AD path.

Notable scenes:
-Everyone's favorite Ingram clone is on the base.
-Domon acts ponderous about the missing Gundam Fighters.
-Shiro actually talks about something relevant to the stage.

And with no further ado...

Chapter 013
Battle Line on Burning Sand

Full mission recording

Heading into Zeon here. I wonder if the UC path has a crossover mission into the AD storyline around here - Nerd, can you confirm either way?

"... ugh, that is some weather. Just our luck... visibility is going to suck in that." Shiro shakes his head.

Welcome to the new mechanic of the day: Sandstorm. I can only see the map within a certain number of spaces of my units; everything else is obscured. Fog of war. Kind of annoying since you can't target things you can't see, but fortunately the range is pretty substantial, so it doesn't get in the way that much. I feel like there might be an accuracy penalty near the edges of the visual range, but I can't tell.

[Battle Animation:]
A beam rifle shot streaks out of the sandstorm towards Shining Gundam.
Domon: "What the?!"
Domon raises his left forearm, hoping to block it with the reinforced wrist guard.
The shot glances off of the wrist guard, causing minimal damage.
[714 damage (Guard)]

And emerging from the sandstorm is none other than the Dark Army! Their numbers are pretty impressive, and the things are a bitch to take down - low accuracy, but lots of HP, and they actually have some low-key regen.

New units:

The Werkbau pulls up it's RAAM rifle and targets the suit nearest to the right end and fires twice, one laser and one projectile.

Werkbau is a nice unit, about on par with its Alpha 3 performance. Kind of a real/super hybrid, it doesn't dodge as well as a Gundam, but it can take a hit or two without going down. Cobray's impressive stats give it great damage with all its ranged weapons.

[Battle Animation:]
Ryuusei: "Show me what you guys got!"
The white Gespenst rushes forward. It's hand picks up the M950 Machine Gun and aims it at one of the mobile suits.
Ryuusei: "We gotta get them quick."
The trigger is pulled and many shots are fired.
Shots riddle the frame of the mech, damaging it heavily.
[3180 damage]
Dark Army: "........"
Ignoring the damage, it fires at Ryuusei with its beam rifle.
Ryuusei:"Shi-!"
Ryuusei works with the controls in attempt to make Gespsy move to the side.
"Gespy" takes a glancing blow to the shoulder, damaging the armor but not any important systems.
[1110 damage]

Ryuusei is in a Gespenst right now, so he's pretty lackluster. He's worth leveling, though, for the R-1 later and the SRX ultimately. Not too impressive on this mission, though.

[Battle Animation:]
Shiro: "Are the pilots in those thing actually piloting?"
He raises the RX-79's machine gun and sprays bullets upon the enemy.
Shiro: "Then I'll lay some suppressive fire, get in there."
The spray of bullets doesn't cause any real damage, but the suits hesitate, being pushed back a bit.
[1890 damage]
Dark Army: "........"

Shiro is an example of a top-tier pilot in a lukewarm mobile suit. Unfortunately, this game is pretty stringent on switching pilots into different suits, so he's stick with the RX-79 for now. I'm using him for a good reason, though, as you should see in the second half of the game.

After a few of the Dark Mooks go down, we get this mission's first boss enemy:

Bursting out of the sand comes a giant Gundam head on the end of a long, tentacle-like neck. It stands several times taller than the mobile suits.

Gundam head! At 14,000 HP, it's not too formidable, and is actually an advantage for this part of the stage:

Domon: "I knew it. The self-recovery...the pilots of those mobile suits...this Gundam head..."
Domon: "This can only be the work of the Dark Gundam, which means I've finally found you...KYOJI!!!!"
As Domon yells the name, Shining Gundam undergoes several small changes.
The shoulder armor slides up, the fins on the back rotate upward, the wrist guards fan out, and pieces on the ankles of Shining Gundam fold down, and massive amounts of energy come pouring out.
Domon: "KYOJI! Mark my words well, my brother! I will never forgive you! You've taken away our mother, and shamed our father. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGIVEN!"

UG's Super Mode is one of the most bullshit 130 Will abilities in SRW history. +10 to all stats AND +25% to damage - it's like SEED and Mazin Power rolled into one. It's only available intermittently for plot reasons, but whenever Domon has it, he's basically unstoppable.

The next phase of the battle is almost effortless, as the Head goes down in a single round of attacks:

[Battle Animation:]
Domon: "This hand of mine shines and ROARS!"
Domon yells as both of Shining Gundam's hands start putting out massive quantities of energy.
Domon: "Its bright cry TELLS ME TO DEFEAT YOU!"
Shining Gundam's hands are brought together and a blade of energy is formed.
Domon swings the blade around.
Domon: "TAKE THIS! My love, my anger, and ALL MY SORROW!"
Shining Gundam leaps into the air, holding the blade up high as it grows to three times the Gundam's length.
Domon: "SHINING FINGER SWORD!!!"
the Shining Finger Sword crashes into the head of the enemy, a massive flareup of energy crackling at the point of impact.
It roars, seems to push the sword back for a moment...
then shatters, the sword cleaing all the way down the tentacle.
[5878 damage (Critical)]
The remains explode dramatically behind Shining Gundam.

This mission has an interesting BM condition - Domon has to defeat 2 Dark Zakus and the Gundam Head - and I just accomplished it. Doing pretty good so far.

With that taken care of, the sandstorm effect ends, revealing a group of Zakus surrounding our mission's target: The Apsalus II. (I wonder what happens if you send units up here before defeating the Gundam Head...?)

[Battle Animation:]
And around the next curve, right in front of Ryuusei, a massive mobile weapon swerves through the air.
It swoops low across the ground, attempting to ram Ryuusei's Gespenst.
Ryuusei: "Ah... UWAAAHHH!"
The Gespenst jumps, in whichever direction seems best. Ryu is in a panic.
Ryuusei jumps to the side, but the Gespenst is caught by one of the side wings of the Apsalus, and send crashing across the canyon floor.
[3011 damage (Defeated)]
Ryuusei: "Gu...guys..."

As that clip demonstrates, the Apsalus is not to be taken lightly. No fancy tricks like the Behemoth had 2 missions back, but it has 32,000 HP, high defense, and very high-damage attacks. Dealing with it doesn't involve any tricks: Just hit it hard, preferably from a good distance, and use Spirit abilities wisely.

Once it gets down to ~10k HP, the mission gets cut short by a cutscene. The Apsalus fires on Quatre...

[Battle Animation:]
Shiro: "Quatreeee!!"
The 79 runs and vaults off the side of the cliff.
In his scramble, the 79 drops its shield, and firing the boosters at full power, hands forward to brace it, the smaller mobile suit rams the side of the side of the massive mobile armor.
[2800 damage]
Shiro's slam knock's the Apsalus off target, and a particle beam tears past Quatre and destroys a section of cliffside instead.
[Miss]
However, the Apsalus swerves around, slamming the RX-79 against the wall.
It drags across the wall, crushing the 79 in-between, tearing off both legs.
[3650 damage (Defeated)]
[End Battle Animation]
Quatre: "Sh-Shiro!"
???: "Federation pilot! Let go of me! Are you trying to get yourself killed?!"
Shiro: "Th-that voice..."
???: "...Shiro?"
Shiro: "Aina!? Aina Sahalin!?"

And then the Apsalus retreats, taking Gundam Romeo off with it. Shiro will be unavailable for the next couple mission before coming back, and Cobray gets ordered to cease using the Werkbau, so upgrade funds this mission will mainly be going into Burning Gundam.

Next Week: Wargrowlmon dies!
