How long can I keep this up every day

Welcome back!

Today's cutscenes:
-Zanky cooking scene with Kaname and various other people.
-Sim battle antics.
-Sousuke fails at life. Nice substitute for Tessa apparently not really being in the game.

Chapter 011
Behemoth Awakens

Full mission recording

As you might have guessed from that set of cinematics, this is an FMP-centric stage. The mission opens with a long on-foot cutscene segment as Sousuke is extracted from the school. Blah blah blah, Kaname is kidnapped, high-speed truck chase, then it jumps into an interesting new mechanic for this game: Personnel Battles.

This plays out similarly to the normal gameplay bits, but instead of mechs, you just have the pilots, fighting on foot. The numbers are about 10x smaller (Sousuke has 380 HP), and you can't upgrade/equip/use parts, but you still get spirit abilities as normal. Meanwhile, Simon, Lockon, and Excellen deploy outside, so there are two battles going on at once.

The enemies inside are terrorists, and the enemies outside are generic Ganmen. New units for me:

"Hey! If you want a girl to come somewhere with you, you ought to be a bit nicer!" Excellen yells, firing the Oxtongue's bullets at the enemies.

Excellen's about how she was in OG1/2. Great range, good evasion, decent damage output. However, I have a lot of sniper types, so she won't really be seeing as much action as she would in the other games.

"You beast bastards are gonna pay for what you did to the carrier!" Simon shouts as he charges at the nearest Ganmen and throws a drill-augmented punch.

We saw Simon in earlier chapters, but he really shines now that he has a full mech. Gurren-Lagann is one of the best middleweight Supers in the game, and I'll be keeping it upgraded.

"Take this!" Dynames pulls out both of its GN beam pistols, targets two of the ganmen, shooting two beams out of each gun.

Dynames is an interesting machine, a sniper unit that can actually take hits. It has a GN Field, halfway-decent HP, and even the physical shields to neutralize attacks, making it damn hard to take out for a realtype.

Sousuke glances over the truck at his assailants, then ducks behind cover and tosses a grenade towards them.

Unsurprisingly, Sousuke dominates on the Personnel Battle side, with several weapons and accuracy through the roof. Duo provides good cover fire, though...

Two of the men go down as Kalinin pushes Kaname out of the way and shoots the other two, who go down. Grabbing Chidori's arm, he throws her in the direction of the group.

Surprisingly, Kalinin is available here as an ally NPC. His stats are about on par with Sousuke's, although he has over 500 HP.

Anyway, the Personnel Battle ends pretty quickly; I guess this was just a demonstration of the mechanic. Sort of a tutorial level. Once that ends, though, the real fun begins:

The truck bursts out of the cockpit just in time to see an unholy abomination of overcompensation bursting out of the ship.

The Behemoth is more or less what we'll be fighting for the rest of the mission. And it's no pushover, either - at 24,000 HP, it'll take a long time to take it down. Even better, the Arablest is shot down before it can be delivered properly, meaning I have to stall for 2 turns while Sousuke gets to it.

A strangely-shaped drill forms on Gurren-Lagann's head, giving it added mobility in the water, and Simon attempts to dodge the bullets.

Fun fact: Gurren-Lagann has A-level water aptitude. It's the little things.

[Battle Animation:]
Revving up the guns, she shoots a beam of energy at the -- well, at whatever it is -- she doesn't care about the name!
Excellen: "Energy beams, go!"
The beam slams into the shield, having very little effect.
[0 damage (Lambda Driver)]
The machine turns on Weiss and fires, but the gunfire is much diminished from the last time, due to Lockon's attack.
Even with the cockishness, Excellen knows that her Weissy can't take all that much, and so she shoots forward, trying to miss the gunfire.
Excellen: "Shooting a little weak there, aren't we? So much for all that compensation!"
The machinegun fire is no match for Weiss's speed, and Excellen manages to dodge the attack.

The Behemoth is more or less unstoppable right now. Thanks to the pilot's Lambda Driver bullshit, he's casting Zeal and Guard every turn. The Guard combined with his shield make it nigh-impossible to even damage him. I think it was at about 21k by the time Sousuke enters the fight.

[Battle Animation:]
The Arbalest leaps into view behind the Behemoth, rifle in hand, and unloads a rapid-fire series of shots into where he thinks the cockpit is based on seeing the boy board it before.
Sparks fly through the air, but the bullets don't penetrate.
[0 damage (Lambda Driver)]
The Behemoth turns menacingly before laughing, the high-pitched voice of it's pilot amplified to a much deeper, almost monster-like tone.
Gripping it's sword it brings it down vertically on the Arbalest, prepared to take it and whatever buildings are around out in one strike
The Arbalest dives to the left to avoid the strike, off the building and onto the nearest semi-stable surface.
The building is crushed under the weight of the sword and collapses. The Arbalest barely makes it out un-cleaved.

Looks like Sousuke can't get through, either. But wait, a cutscene!

Kaname suddenly clutches at her arms, and goes into a light trance.
Kaname: "What....I...know this..."
She quickly snaps out of it, and grabs the radio.
Kaname: "Sousuke!"
Sousuke: "Chidori?"
Kaname: "Listen up! I don't understand it very well, but at it's groin, there seems to be a cooling system for a Lambda Driver."
Kaname: "You need to attack there.....probably."
Kittan: "...The groin?"
Sousuke: "...understood."
Excellen: "Make sure it isn't stiff!"
Excellen: "And drive it in!"
Kaname: "Regular attacks won't work, so use your Lambda Driver!"

Excellen jokes, and another cutscene attack!

Sousuke charges straight towards the Behemoth, gathering his concentration. My attack will hit. It will pierce its shield. Believe it!
As he approaches its legs, he pulls the Arbalest into a slide. Breathe in, close your eyes, and let your power out when you exhale. I can do it.
As he slides past underneath the Behemoth, he activates the Lambda Driver and fires a single, supercharged rifle shot to the target Chidori indicated.
The shot strikes true, and Behemoth lurches for a bit.
[2400 damage]
A mechanical voice can be heard over the band: "Lambda Driver coolant damaged, limited functionality. Weight function prioritized."
The barrier Behemoth had been projecting slowly begins to evaporate.

And with that, the Lambda Driver is down, which gives me two legs up on the competition: The Behemoth doesn't have a shield, and it stops getting those free Spirit abilities every round. From here, we start cutting it to pieces.

The leg is blasted from under the Behemoth's leg and it slowly but surely topples over, landing on the ground with a resounding crash.
As it hits, the voice once again echoes out:
"Lambda Driver function is zero. Purging Behemoth."
And with that, Behemoth starts to fall apart. Rapidly.
The ground below it buckles and cracks under the immense weight of the armor
Sousuke closes his eyes and exhales softly, relaxing his grip on the controls. "Target eliminated."

I see what you did there, Sousuke

Or perhaps I should call you

Heero Yuy

Anyway, mission over! Sinking some money into the Arbalest after this, I think it's earned it.

Next week: We suck at assassinations!
