I hope you didn't think I was going to do every mission
Welcome back! A few conversation scenes before this mission:
Takato angsts.
Domon goes to find information about the Dark Gundam, but it doesn't lead anywhere. Foreshadowing for future missions?
Quatre plays the violin and has a heart to heart with Elzam. (I swear I've heard this song somewhere, but I don't think it's from Wing... can anyone identify?)
Sanger and a few of the pilots I'm going to be sending on this mission discuss the upcoming peace meeting with the Aerogaters. This event is pulled straight out of OG1, so if you've played that, you know how this is going to go.
Anyway.
Mission 005
Guests from Afar
Full mission recording
Starts out with more long cutscene - this IS SRW, after all. Albert Grey, from OG1, shows up and trolls everyone, but he's not who we're worried about:
Next to it, on a small platform, stands an uninterested-looking man.
He is. Good ol' Shu is here, and this continues to basically follow the OG1 scene blow-for-blow. Shortly following the Granzon's entrance is an Aerogater battleship, and that's when everything goes to hell.
Takato: *notices something* "Huh? ...Hey, where did.... Where did Shu go? I can't see him anywhere, guys!"
Takato: "That guy near the huge new mech before!"
Elzam: Dammit... just what's going on here...?
Kittan: "Huh? Is he that thing's pilot?"
Kyosuke: ...shit. This just keeps getting better.
Eita: "Sir! Huge energy response from the Granzon!"
Tetsuya: "What?!"
Oh, Tetsuya.
Commence cutscene, as the Granzon switches from allied to neutral and uses Graviton Gun on the alien ship, dropping its health by about a quarter. The Aerogater ship, of course, turns hostile, and a jillion more Aerogater bugs spawn, just in case we had been missing them. Cue battle.
This is technically our first three-sided battle. The UES are on our side as uncontrollable ally units, but Granzon will readily attack both the UES forces and the Aerogaters. Since the Granzon has a whopping 50,000 HP, we're not going to mess with it if we don't have to.
New EDF mechs:
Seeing the Aerogaters charge, Kyosuke ignites Alt's verniers and surges forward, charging his heat horn. When he comes in range, he slashes deeply into the aerogater as he passes it.
Kyosuke retains the same badassery that made him so valuable in past SRW games. Solid pilot, machine that takes hits like the tank it is, great damage output. Only problem is that he runs the risk of running out of ammo with all his worthwhile weapons.
Elzam thrusts Trombe forward to flank Alt's side, providing covering fire with a few blasts from his rifle directed at a bug ahead of them.
Ratsel Elzam is, of course, a godly pilot. Every Aerogater unit except maybe the battleship has a 0% chance to hit him, AND he can use Focus and Alert on top of that. Same as always.
Kittan shouts as the King Kittan charges directly at the bugs, stabbing one with its head point.
Kittan's pretty good, although right now his mech is really lacking in the area of attacks. It literally has only one "weapon," the Kittan Stinger. More worthwhile once he gets his upgrade.
Shining Gundam rockets toward the nearest bug, unsheathing its beam saber and slicing upwards in a diagonal fashion when in striking range.
Shining Gundam is another solid unit, although it doesn't have much in the way of ranged attacks. It dodges well and has monstrous damage output, especially once I unlock its Will 130+ ability, Super Mode.
The bugs go down easily enough, with all this on our side. Next event triggers after a certain number of bugs are taken out, causing the remaining Aerogaters to retreat.
Surrounded by the husks of destroyed aerogater bugs, the Granzon is charging a second sphere of energy.
Shu: "And now... for the Finale."
Kyosuke: Watch out!
Tetsuya: "What's he doing?!"
The Granzon hurls this orb at... the Shirogane.
One more cutscene Graviton Gun later, the Shirogane is out of commission, and Granzon turns into a full-on enemy unit. New mission objective: Reduce the Granzon below 80% HP. Unfortunately, even that much will prove difficult.
Really, it's a good thing that this is an SRWOG2-style dummy objective, since even getting CLOSE to the Granzon is an ordeal. Kittan loses most of his HP on Shu's first turn before we can get into attack range.
[Battle Animation:]
Wargrowlmon flies in with not-seen-before speed, and arrives in a flash before Granzon.
Takato: "One more!! Digimodify-- Power activate!!"
Wargrowlmon: "Atomic....BLASTER!!!"
A throbbing ball of firey energy blasts forth from the two canons on Wargrowlmon's chest.
A thunderous explosion envelops the Granzon, scattering flames in every direction and raising a huge cloud of dust.
Through the dust cloud, a pale light can be seen...
Surrounded by flames, the Granzon stands untouched, a shimmering energy shield surrounding it.
[1179 damage (Warp Field)]
Shu: Impressive spirit... such is youth.
Shu: Perhaps you'd like to see what a real battle is like...
The Granzon faces its right hand forwards, palm open, and begins to charge energy.
Then, a portal appears in space in front of it.
The Granzon fires a rapidfire, chaotic stream of lasers into the portal.
As it does so, dozens of tiny portals appear one at a time in a sphere around Wargrowlmon, each opening just long enough to admit a single beam.
Wargrowlmon is pounded repeatedly from every direction, its body being completely obscured by explosions.
[5614 damage (Critical, Defeated)]
Takato: "Wargrowlmon!! WARGROWLMON!"
As the attack relents, streams of data flow away with the smoke, and a tiny orange digimon is just barely visible on the ground where Wargrowlmon was standing.
Ugh, if I was smart I would've used Guard there. I lose my primary tank on the second turn to a stupid mistake.
After a couple turns of this rape, I bet on the long odds, Kyosuke-style, with a complex Offensive Support/Combination Attack chain:
[Battle Animation:]
Quatre: "Here I go!"
Quatre then takes both heat shotels, and charges them up while running towards the Granzon. when he gets close enough he starts to repeatedly slash at a single spot of the shield.
Elzam descends to the ground, and redirects the bulk of Trombe's power to its rifle. Trombe fires shot after powerful shot at Granzon, aiming at the same spot Quatre is targeting with Sandrock in order to expose a weak point.
Kyosuke puts the maximum speed into Alt's verniers as he can in order to give himself as much momentum as possible. Bringing his stake to bear, he draws a bead on the spot that's being attack.
Kyosuke: "Quatre! Move!"
Elzam: "It's all up to you now, Kyosuke!"
Without waiting for Quatre to get away, not having the time, Alt leaps forward and thrusts his stake as hard as he can at Granzon, hoping to punch through and into the cockpit.
[3866 damage (Warp Field)]
As the attack pushes forwards, Granzon thrusts its arm upwards.
Its hand disappears, as if reaching into an invisible hole in space.
Out of this non-existent space, it slowly extracts an incredibly huge black sword.
It swings it with incredible speed and force, the sword momentarily becoming a blur.
A moment later, Alteisen's right arm drops to the ground.
[4099 damage]
It looks like that didn't work, but this actually drops Granzon to 39,140 HP - just below the 80% mark. Hello, Battle Mastery!
However, the event doesn't trigger until the following turn, and in the meantime, Shu targets Elzam, which I hadn't been counting on. One hit from that sword drops Elzam, leaving me with four out of my original six units, none of them in good condition.
Then, another cutscene initiates, starting with Shu attacking Quatre (I'm guessing it goes for whoever has the most HP left in this scene):
Shu: "Time to end this, I suppose. Now humanity should understand what happens when they try to use me."
EDF Tech: "Energy signature approaching the base at incredible speed! One in number!"
[Battle Animation:]
Granzon hefts its sword, and its thrusters flare again, as it launches towards Quatre...
...and it stops before reaching him, its sword crossed with another.
[Defensive Support (Cybuster): 0 damage (Parry)]
???: "SHU! Are you planning to destroy the Earth just like you destroyed Langran?"
It's Masaki! However, I'm not going to get to use him here, since the mission ends shortly afterwards:
Shu: "You're here, too? How interesting."
Shu: "Unfortunately..."
The Granzon emits a wave of gravity, dropping all mechs in the area to the ground.
Shu: "I don't have time to play with you."
Shu: "I need to pay Dr. Bian a visit."
Pilot: "SHUUUUUU!"
Granzon rises into the air, disappearing into another portal, and disappears off of your sensors.
And thus are we spared from having to suffer any more Granzon attacks! Sadly, proper upgrading will have to wait this time, since repairing Wargrowlmon and Trombe eats a good chunk of the funds I won in this battle. Also, due to this game's Pilot Injury System, Elzam will be unselectable as an extra pilot for the next mission or two. Kind of an annoying system, since it's docking him EXP, but the game seems to be balanced for it.
Next time: Masaki's cats make fun of Shinji!
Takato angsts.

I've been thinking about 'importing' *cough* this game myself. I mean, the cast list is ridiculously, insanely huge, plus FUCK YEAH NANOHA AND DIGIMON ARE NOW /m/!
Looks like they really ramped up the difficulty compared to W and K, though (not that that's saying much loooool). I wouldn't have expected
RatselElzam of all people to go down this early in the game. The Pilot Injury stuff looks like it could get really annoying and lead to a shitload of soft resets when I play.It could be worse, though.
