An ongoing column

Let's Play Super Robot Wars: Unlimited Generation

Starting a new game, gonna gloss over the intro stuff because my capture program wasn't working during the intro cinematic. Long story short, it's the year NCE 104, Earth Sphere is under attack by a jillion factions, yada yada yada, the usual stuff. Introduces the EDF, this game's Generic Good Guys group. It's a Tokyo-based group of elite mech guys or whatever, nothing too exciting here.

Major plot points:
-Takato gets intro'd right off the bat as the New Guy. Comedy scene with Guilmon, Sanger shows up and intimidates the hell out of him.
-Simon moving in and talking to Quatre for a bit. Various character intros.
-Fei gets dragged in from his village, and jailed. Sanger has a quick cinematici battle where he kicks Fei's ass, and makes him promise to fight with the EDF.
-Alarm sounds, everyone off to mechs.

Mission 001
First Contact

Man, kind of intimidated by that 001 there. Are there really gonna be 100+ missions?

Full mission recording

Sorry for all the random chatter; I imported this, so the options menu is all in Japanese, meaning it takes a few missions for me to figure out how to disable the OOC Comments.

The mission's pretty basic, as is expected for a first stage. The enemies at the start are all generic Aerogator bugs. Not a lot of team customization yet, since Sanger isn't available as a playable on this mission. The enemies are spread out and the Battle Mastery condition involves taking the first wave down fast, so I split my forces up: Simon and Kurtis in the center, Takato and Eureka on the elft, and Quatre and Fei on the right.

Unit demonstrations!

Kurtis landed elegantly on the spire of a tall building with intentional dramatic flare. He aimed his fist nonchalantly at one of the beetles distracted by Lagann and fired it at its thorax in a ROCKET PUNCH.

Kurtis is a pretty decent unit, and I'll be using him a lot. his HP is a horrifically low 1800 without upgrades, but his evasion is high enough that most enemies have a low-to-zero chance of scoring hits on him, making him very reliable for mopping up mooks. Decent damage output and a few good multi-target attacks seal the deal.

Simon aims at one of the other bugs, and a drill emerges from Lagann's forehead. Lagann then charges straight at it.

Simon is, of course, going to be one of my mains. His combat capabilities aren't great on this mission, since he only has Lagann, but I want him getting EXP from the get-go, so that he'll be competitive in level later on.

Wargrowlmon lands with a powerful crash in the midst of the bugs, and, with a roaring growl, swings his bladed arm around in a powerful attack on the bearest bugs. Takato is too shocked by the scene to react right away.

Wargrowlmon is our first really tankish Super. Over 6k HP right off the bat, and lots of hard-hitting attacks. Unfortunately, his accuracy is a little lacking, but Takato starts with Strike, so we're covered there.

Eureka rushes Nirvash forward, blades out. Nirvash's speed helps it manuever through easily enough, slashing off the pincers where it could. Eureka stares forward in determined focus, barely noticing Takato's words, slashing a blade through one of the metalic bugs.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed with Nirvash. It seems like a pretty good Gundam-esque unit, but Eureka's Spirit set is kind of wonky and its damage output is really low. I don't think it'll be seeing much use after this mission, but I'll be sure to make use of her while I can.

Quatre pulls out Sandrock's shotels and heads to the bugs nearest to him and slashes at them. "By Allah, what ARE these things?!"

Quatre's a good B-list unit - Sandrock's not particularly impressive of a machine, but Quatre's a good pilot, and he gets Trust at higher levels, so I definitely want to keep him around.

Fei's eyes narrow as he watches the carnage, images of his own village flashing through his mind. His expression now one of deadly focus, he lets out a loud scream, leaping into the air and bringing his gear's fist down on the nearest bug.

Weltal's kind of weird - it hits like a super but takes hits like a real, and is a melee-focused machine, making it kind of hard to use. Fortunately, its evasion is decent, and Fei can use Focus. Besides, these enemies aren't too dangerous.

The rest of this part of the mission is general mop-up, so I won't go into much detail on it. The bugs don't have much HP, but have Defensive Support for some reason.

After a few turns pass, a special scene triggers:

Wargrowlmon: "Takato, there's something else here!"
Takato: "I...can feel it. Guys! There's something else out here!! Guys!!" *comming all the pilots*
Wargrowlmon: "Another digimon," he growls, "...Takato, what should we do?"
Takato: "Eureka, is your robo-- Is nirvash all right?"
Takato: "Something worse than these bugs is just over that way! ...I think it's a digimon, and I think Wargrowlmon is the best opponent for it!"

The thing about this cutscene is that it automatically moves Wargreymon away from the battle, towards where the boss is going to spawn - leaving the somewhat frail Nirvash without any support. Annoying.

Anyway, the boss is Mihiramon, a big Tiger thing of some sort. It's the first mission, so it only has 9,600 HP, but it can dodge decently well, and is more than a match for a soloing Wargreymon. I start wrapping up the remaining bugs, so that I can move the others in to support. Fei, Quatre, and Kurtis together drop its HP pretty quick, and then Takato deals the final blow.

Takato clenches his teeth, looking through whincing eyes at Wargrowlmon outside of the mech. "...Wargrowlmon, get up. Get up! We have to defeat it!!"
Wargrowlmon recovers just as Takato does, and takes the opportune moment Simon created for him to power up the canons on his chest. "ATOMIC..."
Takato finishes the attack name from the cockpit: "...BLASTER!!"

Thus ending the mission. There's a short angsty cutscene between Takato and Eureka after the mission, after which we get a chance to upgrade units and save. Which I will!

Next Time: Simon already gets his upgrade!

When I saw the title, I immediately thought "the Youtube walkthroughs". Of course it's not a video game ;) but are you trying to do something a bit similiar? Like a critique as you play (or played)?

"Let's Plays" are a wonderful tradition of funny and bizarre commentary by people as they play video games.

Only... yeah. This isn't exactly a video game ;D

*checks*

Yep, still best idea ever.

I see no Deus in this log. Therefore, I refuse this post's existence.

It's gonna be like, 500 years until I see what the player thinks about Nobel Gundam and Hartzenen!

EveryBODY knows that G will be the player's all-time favorite mech! !
